Last Quarter’s Flute Raffle
INAFA advisory board member Peter Phippen, from his private collection of flutes, donated last quarter’s raffle flute. It is an American Indian flute made by Louis Webster. Wisconsin INAFA member Michael Farmer gifted this flute to Peter, who is parting with it to raise funds for the new INAFA Web site and its maintenance. Born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and raised on the Menominee Reservation, Louis Webster (b. 1949) is of Menominee, Stockbridge, Potawatomi, and Oneida descent. One of Louis Webster’s trademarks in flute construction is the use of a thin piece of birch bark for the spacer under the bird. He was inspired to make flutes when he met Edward Wapp Wahpeconiah who was teaching a class on Native American song, music, and dance at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the 1970s. Ed Wapp brought a Native American flute into the class and Louis studied it closely and decided to try and make a flute on his own. This began a lifelong passion of flute making and playing for Louis. According to Louis, “People can take inanimate objects and make them instruments of power. It is the same with the flute. It’s your will and your belief that gives something power. Some people expect to find nirvana by getting one of these flutes. And, in some cases, it works. But, it doesn’t if your heart really isn’t there to begin with. If you really let the flute get inside you, it can do wonderful things for your being.”
Peter would enjoy speaking to the raffle winner about the unique qualities of this flute.
